Cape Town has an abundance of things to see and do, and it was a real challenge having to leave potential adventures off the list 🙂
Of our top 10 things to do in Cape Town, the first three on the list are highly recommended. The remaining seven activities are in no particular order, but are sure to appeal to all ages and personalities.
1. Table Mountain
In 2012, Cape Town’s iconic landmark was named as one of the New7Wonders of the world. For unsurpassed natural beauty and panoramic views over Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean, spending a few hours on top of Table Mountain is an experience of a lifetime. Visitors may hike one of the various trails to the top, or else for an unforgettable journey, make use of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. To make the most of all that Table Mountain has to offer, be sure to check the weather forecast before heading out.
2. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
Considered one of the great botanic gardens of the world, Kirstenbosch sits at the base of the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. Founded more than a century ago and established by Harold Pearson, the garden naturally took some time to develop over its first 50 years. Today, the rich biodiversity experienced at Kirstenbosch is evident due to the vision and passion of it’s founders. For truly amazing walks, views, and perhaps a picnic in a secluded spot, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is Cape Town’s little piece of Heaven on Earth.
3. V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is one of the most successful waterfronts in the world; you’ll see why and you’ll be back! With an abundance of restaurants, retail shops, and live events the V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s top attractions. Home to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), the Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town Helicopters, Africa Padel and more. There are so many reasons to visit the V&A Waterfront and within only a 15 minute walk from Green Point, you have no excuse not to.
4. Lion’s Head Hike
Lion’s Head rises 669 m above sea level and is situated between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. For picturesque views over the Atlantic Seaboard and the city of Cape Town, it’s well worth the hike to the top. The 5 km hike is considered moderate difficulty, and depending on fitness level, could take between 2 – 3hrs for a return trip. The main route begins from the Lion’s Head car park area, located off Kloof Nek Road toward Signal Hill. Otherwise, there is an access point 500m from Milford House, which will extend your walk by 1 hour. The hike is especially popular during sunrise and sunset, as well as during full moon.
5. The Company’s Garden
Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy a spot of tea in The Company’s Garden, an oasis of green right in Cape Town’s city centre. The garden was originally established in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company as a refreshment point for passing ships. Around 30 years later, the garden’s purpose changed to include an array of flora. The majestic trees and views of Table Mountain will fill you with admiration, and you’ll be captivated by the lush beauty contained in Cape Town’s oldest garden.

On the Rocks in Bloubergstrand (23km from Milford House) serves thoughtfully prepared and well-presented speciality cuisine, and has the most magnificent view of Table Mountain. Make some memories that you’re sure to fondly look back upon, and book a table and enjoy some drinks whilst watching the sun dip into the Atlantic Ocean.
7. High Tea at The Cellars-Hohenort
Situated in Constantia Valley, The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel and Spa feels in a world of it’s own. Indulge in some “me” time, and enjoy Classic High Tea served in The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel’s Greenhouse. Or pick another reason to visit… The Cellars-Hohenort’s historical buildings and stunning gardens are a calling card in their own right.
8. Promenade Walk
The main Promenade spans about 5km (3 miles) along the Atlantic Seaboard between Mouille Point, through Three Anchor Bay, Sea Point and Bantry Bay. To extend your walk or run, you could continue along through Clifton, and all the way to Camps Bay (an additional 4km/2.5 miles). The refreshing, scenic walk is family friendly and offers fantastic sunset views that you’ll never get bored of.
9. Oranjezicht City Farm Market
Make the OZCF Market one of your stops near the start or end of your Promenade walk, and enjoy a hearty brunch in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Selling fresh grown produce from the Oranjezicht City Farm, the OZCF Market is open on weekends from 9 – 2pm. Quality, locally made products, as well as gorgeous fresh flowers and plants adorn the aisles. The OZCF Market caters for vegans and raw foodies, and there is an array of gluten- and dairy-free delights to tempt the tastebuds. Prepare to leave satisfied and suitably inspired!
10. Camps Bay Beach
With Lion’s Head and the Twelve Apostles setting the scene, the pristine sands and clear turquoise blue waters of Camps Bay beach are not be missed. After sunbathing and swimming, choose from one of Camps Bay’s many bars and restaurants, and delight in the sun setting into the Atlantic Ocean.
